Hurricane Preparedness

have you prepared for hurricane season

Essential Strategies for Safety

As we step into June, we officially kick off hurricane season. While hurricanes are often associated with coastal regions, their impacts can reach far inland, posing risks of heavy rain, powerful winds, flooding, and even tornadoes. At Inframark, safeguarding our colleagues, clients, and communities is always a priority, prompting us to share these comprehensive hurricane preparedness strategies aimed at ensuring your safety.

We’ve curated a list to help you strengthen your defenses against the formidable forces of nature. Beyond the basics of emergency kits and evacuation plans, our recommendations include additional proactive measures, strategic planning, and invaluable resources to empower you in the face of weather-related adversity.

  1. Know the Difference: A hurricane watch means weather conditions are possible within a given area. A hurricane warning is more serious and means the conditions are expected in a stated area. For more information about hurricane watches and warnings, check out the National Weather Service’s Hurricane Center.
  2. Build an Emergency Kit: Assemble a well-stocked emergency kit containing non-perishable food, water, first-aid supplies, medications, flashlights, batteries, and a battery-powered radio. Consider the unique needs of your family, including infants, elderly members, and pets, when preparing your supplies.
  3. Review and Update Insurance Policies: Take proactive steps to safeguard your financial well-being by reviewing and updating your insurance policies. Ensure adequate coverage for your home, belongings, and vehicles against potential damage or loss caused by hurricanes and related hazards.
  4. Protect Important Documents: Safeguard critical documents, such as identification papers, insurance policies, medical records, and property deeds, by storing them in a waterproof container. Additionally, create digital copies stored securely in the cloud or on a portable drive to facilitate easy access and retrieval.
  5. Mitigate Property Risks: Minimize potential hazards around your property by trimming trees, securing loose outdoor items, and reinforcing vulnerable structures. Implement measures to fortify windows, doors, and roof structures against high winds and flying debris, reducing the risk of property damage during hurricanes.
  6. Designate a Safe Room: Identify a designated safe room within your home, such as a basement, interior room, or reinforced shelter, to seek refuge during the height of a hurricane. Ensure all family members are familiar with the location and safety protocols, particularly children, elderly individuals, and individuals with disabilities.
  7. Prep Your Vehicles: Ensure you are ready to evacuate at a moment’s notice. Fill your gas tank, check your tires, and have an emergency kit in your car. For any vehicles you are leaving behind, move them into a garage or under cover if possible.
  8. Be Ready to Evacuate: If authorities issue evacuation orders, never ignore them! Staying at home can be dangerous during the storm and in the immediate aftermath. Develop and rehearse evacuation plans tailored to your specific circumstances, including multiple evacuation routes and destinations.
  9. Remember Your Furry Friends: Pets need their own supplies and evacuation kits. If you will be evacuating with animals, make sure you identify a shelter or lodging in advance that can accommodate your pets, as some do not accept animals. Make sure all pets wear collars and tags with up-to-date identification information. Always bring pets indoors at the first sign or warning of a storm.
  10. Stay Informed and Vigilant: Remain vigilant and informed throughout hurricane season by monitoring local news, weather updates, and official guidance from emergency management authorities. Stay abreast of evolving threats, evacuation orders, and shelter locations to make informed decisions and take timely action to protect yourself and your loved ones. By integrating these proactive measures into your hurricane preparedness strategy, you can enhance your resilience and readiness to face the challenges posed by severe weather events. Remember, preparedness is not a one-time endeavor but an ongoing commitment.
